Ahmed Akbar Sobhan is a prominent Bangladeshi businessman and the Founder and Chairman of Bashundhara Group. His long-standing presence in the corporate world has helped shape several industries in Bangladesh through steady leadership and strategic growth.
Born on February 15, 1952, in Islampur, a part of old Dhaka City, he grew up in a family that valued education and discipline. He was the youngest of six children. His father worked at the Dhaka High Court as a lawyer, providing a strong example of professional commitment. After completing his early education, he pursued a degree in Business Studies from the University of Dhaka. During his time at the university, he was actively involved in sports and various student activities in addition to his studies.
His career took off in 1978 when he entered the service sector. At the same time, he began to explore opportunities in commercial trading. These early experiences proved valuable in building his business understanding and paved the way for future ventures.
One of his first major initiatives was founding East West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd., which made a quick impact in the real estate sector. The company gained popularity under the name Bashundhara Housing and soon became well-recognized in the local property development market.
Building on this early success, he expanded into other areas and formed the Bashundhara Group. The group diversified into multiple industries, including cement, steel, paper, engineering, shipping, and LP gas. Over the years, it evolved into a major industrial group, managing a diverse range of businesses nationwide.
Today, he leads Bashundhara Group, one of Bangladesh’s largest and most influential corporate entities. His management approach focuses on defined roles, efficient delegation, and clear accountability—principles that have helped maintain consistency and performance across the organization.
In addition to his business responsibilities, he is also involved in various social and humanitarian causes. Both through his company’s CSR initiatives and personal efforts, he supports activities aimed at improving the quality of life for many.
