BHP’s American dream turned into nightmare

BHP Billiton’s sale of its US shale assets marks the end of an ill-timed bet that has left the Anglo-Australian miner almost $20 billion worse off.

After splurging $20 billion in 2011 to acquire the assets, it pumped a further $20 billion developing them. In return it had about $10 billion in operating cashflow, about the same in cash from yesterday’s sale to BP and another smaller transaction, and a series of humiliating multibillion-dollar write-offs.
