Obiechina Sunday Eze is a visionary medical professional, public health advocate, and researcher dedicated to improving healthcare delivery & advancing population health. With over seven years of professional experience, he specializes in the development and implementation of impactful health policies and programs, particularly in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
Currently serving as a Medical Officer at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Eze collaborates with stakeholders to design and execute health initiatives that address pressing public health challenges. His work includes leading the Graphic Health Warning and Smoke-Free Program and serving as the National Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) focal person for the Ministry. In these roles, he ensures the alignment of program indicators with implementation activities, safeguarding the integrity and effectiveness of nationwide health interventions.
Dr. Eze’s contributions extend to his research and leadership roles in major national projects such as the Global Adult Tobacco Survey and the Nationwide STEPS Survey. These initiatives have provided critical data for evidence-based decision-making, influencing policies and improving public awareness about health risks.
Recognized for his outstanding service, Dr. Eze has received numerous honors, including the National Best Youth Corp Member Award by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, the UN Honors Award for Community Empowerment in 2021, and the Nigerian Prize for Leadership in 2022. These accolades reflect his commitment to excellence, leadership, and transformative impact in the health sector.
As a researcher and author, Dr. Eze has co-authored The ABC of Diabetes, a guide on managing diabetes, and What Your Doctor Wished You Knew, a manual on preventive healthcare in resource-limited settings. His novel, If the Rain Comes, addresses cultural stigmas like the twin-killing tradition in Nigeria, fostering dialogue and advocacy for societal change.
Dr. Eze holds an MBBS from the University of Port Harcourt & has advanced training in project design, facilitation, and health data analysis. His expertise in capacity-building includes conducting training for health professionals & improving patient care delivery in underserved communities.
